I also bought this book after hearing her on NPR and judging from the reviews here it seems that getting in NPR is really incomes- generating!I absolutely adored the early sections as Kenya has to negotiate living with Afrocentric parents who often disagree. Being made to be a pet of a circus of Kwanzaa shows for libraries. Being called oona booga. The adult seven days club and the half baked ideas.
But as Kenya gets older the books flails around, some of the stuff with her in a private school kept the same flavor and I was surprised that i quite enjoyed a section with her at her father's farm. But in general Kenya as an older teen felt, writing wise, as discursive as the protagonists life and I don't think that's a good thing, it amazed me how the author is so terrific with little touches... Comparing people to the one on the Cosby show whose job it is to laugh at dr, Huxtable's jokes, or writing "she was in it for the spooning"-- inserted into a pretty dull narrative. This was the only section I felt way ahead of Kenya (who, for example, never does seem to understand consciously the dynamic between her and two make roommates).
We get passages of her father's writing and honestly I was pretty bored... He's writing a novel about a murderous butler which is really a treatise on race relations. In general, I find that including sections of what a character is writing to be an iffy prospect and it didn't really work for me here, but since the final paragraph alludes to it I guess we are meant to take it to heart.
I'm not sure whether the final observation is meant to be taken literally or figuratively,,, if literally it could relate to an earlier scene which I'd assumed was a fantasy, but it doesn't make much sense for the character figuratively either.
Still giving it four stars for the terrific writing in the first half.

Disgruntled A Novel Asali Solomon Books Reviews
I enjoyed reading this story. The end left me wanting to read a part 2. The story was well written, carrying you thru this child's life, told from an adult perspective.
Not a bad read until I turned the page only to find I had reached the end of the book. Too many loose ends, unanswered questions and the lead character didn't seem to grow to a point I would have expected. If I knew this was Vol. 1 of at least a 2 book series, I might consider buying Vol. 2, but I was disappointed for it to end where it did.
I would rather give this 3.5 stars. It is well written and engaging. It held my interest from start to finish, but the ending disappointed me.
I am not a reader who wants a happy ending or for all of the lines in a story to tie up in a neat bow, but this ending was so unsatisfactory. It did not even prompt the reader to consider what happens to these characters next. Instead you close the book, disappointed, and never think of them again.
When author Asali Solomon was interviewed by Terry Gross on National Public Radio, she said that some of her own experiences were incorporated in the novel Disgruntled and ascribed to her main character, Kenya. This departs from many coming of age novels in that
Kenya is bright and academically accomplished and--at times--lives in upper middle class surroundings. This is an insightful novel about
a girl's growing up black in the 1980's in urban America.
As a white West Philly native who attended a large, diverse all-girls high school in the early 70's, I appreciated seeing familiar places and reading about events from Kenya's perspective. I currently work in an independent school in another state, but Kenya's mainline private school experience rings true even for the current culture of such schools which are still struggling to attract a more diverse student body. Solomon's style is straight- forward and engaging. She manages to create vivid visual images with carefully chosen yet simple language. Her well-crafted characters are real and they remain with me. Clearly, I have many connections to this story, but I believe it has broader appeal as a good story, simply told. Although it is a novel, Disgruntled challenges me to reflect on how it was, how it is and how we're going to get it where it needs to be.
